Wedding gown shopping – this is an activity that most women dream of, especially in the years leading up to their wedding. As a bride, your goal is to look like the absolute best version of yourself on your wedding day – the main component of this is your wedding dress. We all have different body types, so it’s important to begin the dress shopping process by understanding the different gown silhouettes and the body types they work best for.
Here is a quick and easy guide on the various wedding gown silhouettes.
This is known as the ‘fairy tale’ dress. It comes with a fitted bodice, and flares at the waist with a full skirt. This silhouette is ideal for most body types, but it can look great on body types that are considered ‘pears’ – smaller at the top than the bottom, because it hides the lower body. It may not be flattering for petites since the skirt can be overwhelming on a small frame.
This has a fitted bodice through the waist and flows out to the ground. It resembles the outline of an uppercase “A”, hence the name “A-line”. This silhouette is ideal for all body types.
This is fitted on the bodice and the hips, and gradually flares to the hem, forming an “A” shape. However, unlike the tradition A-line, the modified A-line has a skirt that will fit closer to the body. Like the “A-line” silhouette, this is ideal for all body types.
This silhouette is fitted throughout the body and flares mid-thigh. This cut is between a modified A-line and a mermaid cut. It is ideal for frames that have smaller waists, such as those who have hourglass frames, banana frames or petite frames. It may not flatter those who are pears and apples because it accentuates the stomach and hip area.
This dress is fitted on the body from the chest to the knee, and then will flare out close to the knee. This silhouette is ideal for slender frames and hourglass body types because it will highlight their curves.
This offers a narrow shape that flows straight down from the neckline to the helm. This is ideal for petite frames, as well as hourglass figures that are willing to show off their curves.
The skirt falls in between the ankle and the knee. It is ideal for all body types.
